Montague Rhodes James was a Cambridge scholar who lived between 1862 and 1936. He was an expert on the early history of the Bible, Medievalist and Antiquarian. He became Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University during the First World War and later provost of Eton School. Today he is best remembered for his ghost stories which he wrote for his own amusement or to entertain friends at Christmas. He is considered the father of the modern ghost story.
