Borley Rectory Documentaries by Paul Adams

Despite the Borley haunting being well in the public eye for over sixty years, there has still not been a full-length, detailed and accurate documentary made about the 'most haunted house in England'.  Enthusiasts of the case have had to make do with short Borley-related films which have been included as part of other paranormal programmes.  The two best films are The Ghost Hunters, made by the BBC in 1975, which included a large Borley segment, and the 1994 Strange But True? which also covered the case.

Thanks to the Youtube website which carries postings of both these programmes, I have been able to link to them and include both on this page.  No copyright infringement is intended by including these clips on this website.

The Ghost Hunters (1975)

This is a well respected documentary in which producer Hugh Burden, a sceptic where the paranormal was concerned, carried out a series of interviews with both ghost hunters and people who claimed to have seen ghosts themselves.  The main part of the Borley-related section of the programme is an extended interview with Peter Underwood which took place at Borley church.  As well as discussing the haunting, Underwood also takes Burden on a tour around the church where they both listen to a recording of a vigil held inside the building in the early 1970s by ghost hunter Geoffrey Croom-Hollingsworth and film cameraman Denny Densham.

Strange But True? (1994)

In the early 1990s, Michael Aspel hosted a series of documentaries which looked at various well known and not so familiar paranormal cases.  Each episode covered two separate topics and included hauntings, premonitions, phantom hitchhikers and mysterious creatures, and featured reconstructions as well as interviews with where possible the actual people involved, both witnesses and investigators.  The Borley haunting was included in one programme; those interviewed included Peter Underwood again, Charles Wintour, one of Price's Official Observers from the 1937-38 tenancy investigation, and the late Alan Wesencraft, Curator of the Harry Price Collection at the University of London.
